Britain's Got Talent Kai & Natalia Q&A: We want to make ballroom cool

By
It's rare you'll ever see Simon Cowell complimenting ballroom dancing. So it was something of a shock last night that the X Factor creator ended up backing a pair of toe-tappers, you'd more associate with Strictly Come Dancing than one of the Syco boss's entertainment shows.

Kai & Natalia became the fourth act voted through to this weekend's Britain's Got Talent final last night, dancing their way into the hearts of the viewers and swaying Simon Cowell away from child singer Paige with their silky footwork.

Digital Spy caught up with the pair this morning to find out how they're feeling about reaching the final stages of the ITV1 show.

Has it started to sink in yet that you'll be dancing for over 15 million viewers this weekend?
Kai: "It hasn't sunk in yet. We never thought we'd get this far."
Natalia: "It's unreal how far we have come. It was really unexpected winning last night."
Kai: "We thought it was one of our best performances last night. We kicked everything we had into that performance. The adrenaline kicked in and it was much, much better than our rehearsals."

Were you shocked that Simon Cowell opted for the ballroom dance duo over the singing youngster act?
Kai:"We thought that. Paige was a lovely girl and she's a fantastic singer and Simon Cowell always picks the singers."
Natalia: "It was such an honour that he saved us. He's got so much experience about him and he knows exactly what he's doing."
Kai: "I think he wants a variety show and not just singers, so that's why he chose us."

Can you guys make ballroom dancing cool?
Kai: "I think it already is cool. I know some guys think it's corny, but we want to bring a modern, funky, twist to it. What we're doing by appearing on this show is revolutionising it. It's an old style dance and people think it's stuffy, but we want to prove that it can be cool."
Natalia: "It's brilliant for us to hear people get in touch with us, saying that we inspired them and that they want to do ballroom dancing now. Maybe when we're older, we'll begin teaching, young and old. We want to spread ballroom to everyone."

Have you faced any bullying because of your love for ballroom?
Kai: "I did get comments when I was younger from boys and mates. They'd say it wasn't cool or comment on the fact that I should be playing football with the guys instead. But nowadays the guys are more jealous of me. They have respect for sticking at it and they're jealous that I get to dance with beautiful young girls. I love what I do, I love dancing."

Is there any hint of romance between you two?
Kai: "We're completely best friends. That's all it is. We're like brother and sister. We're very close, but nothing like that."
Natalia: "We're almost too close. You can't go out with someone that you know too well."

What have you got planned for Saturday's final?
Kai: "We've quite a few things up our sleeve. There's loads of styles we want to incorporate."
Natalia: "We definitely want to up our game again. I think it could be mindblowing on Saturday."

Could you team up with Pudsey the Dog?
Natalia: "That would be quite cool."
Kai:: "Pudsey in the background... Pudsey in the foreground. Pudsey Ballroom!"
Natalia: "I think it would be pretty cool actually! Pudsey & Ashleigh & Kai & Natalia!"

Have you started thinking about what you could spend £500,000 on yet?
Kai: "Our next dance is the main focus right now, but £500,000 is a lot of money and you can't help but think about it."
Natalia: "For now I think our main concern is the routine. After we've performed and heard the judges' comments that is when it will properly kick in."

Britain's Got Talent's live semi-finals continue tonight on ITV1.
