'Apprentice' Tom Gearing becomes street art connoisseur - video

By
Apprentice candidate Tom Gearing paints himself as a connoisseur of street art to get ahead in this week's urban gallery task.

Gearing attempts to convince an artist known as Pure Evil to let Team Phoenix sell his pieces by making reference to other big names on the scene, leaving colleague Laura Hogg speechless.

"What attracts me to street art, and I have a few bits in my house, is traditional kind of street art spray paints," he said. "Myself, I'm a big fan of obviously Space Invader from France, I think [he's] absolutely excellent."

Gearing also namechecks the likes of Banksy and Shepard Fairey, but Nick Hewer remains unconvinced that his apparent enthusiasm will be enough for Phoenix.

"I think Tom's knowledge of the edgy urban art scene has gone pretty well for Phoenix," he admits.

"But I don't really think that they have set out to demonstrate to the artist that they are the people to sell his work."

After leaving the studio, Hogg predicts that the artist "will definitely be impressed" with Gearing's knowledge, while he reveals that Pure Evil is his "first choice" to sell.

The Apprentice airs Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One.
