Leonardo was born in Los Angeles to comic book dealer George DiCaprio and legal secretary Irmelin Indenbirken. His parents split up soon after his birth but remained civil for the sake of their son. Leonardo began his acting career at a very young age, appearing in television commercials and educational films. At the age of five he landed a job on the children's television series Romper Room but was asked to leave because of his disruptive behaviour. Before achieving international fame in 1997 with Titanic, DiCaprio received recognition for films such as What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Marvin's Room and Baz Luhrmanns Romeo and Juliet. He has been nominated for awards for several of his films. Namely, Catch Me If You Can, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, Blood Diamond, The Departed, and Revolutionary Road. Along with award nominations, his biggest commercial successes include Shutter Island and Inception. DiCaprio is also a keen producer, owning Appian Way Productions company. The company has produced films such as Orphan and Gardener of Eden. Leonardo is very close friends with fellow actors Tobey Maguire, Kevin Connolly and Kate Winslet.
