According to president Jim McLauchlin, the drive to recognise the work of the Marvel Comics team's creators has effectively halted after five weeks, says The Comics Reporter.
Cartoonist Jon Morris came up with the idea that fans of the film could donate the price of a ticket to the non-profit organisation that offers financial support for comics creators in need.
Comics legend Jack Kirby was credited in the film after some controversy, but his estate and that of fellow creator Don Heck do not receive any compensation in recognition of their significant contribution to the Marvel Universe.
Co-creator Stan Lee made a brief appearance in the movie, but received no share in the profits.
The Avengers has become one of the most successful movies of all time, grossing an estimated $580 million (£370 million) at the US box office to date.
