Mass Effect 3 will feature many returning characters from the series, but they may work differently than in past games, it has been announced.

During the E3 demo of Mass Effect 3, returning characters Mordin, Legion and Wrex were revealed. However, none of these characters were shown fighting alongside Commander Shepard as squad members.

Bioware gameplay designer Christina Norman revealed through Twitter: "For those asking about 'permanent' squad members, don't assume squad members will work the same way as me1 and me2 (sic)."

Commander Shepard was seen talking to Mordin through a video communication terminal while guiding squad members Garrus and Liara through enemies. Legion was seen driving a support vehicle while Commander Shepard used the vehicle's gun turret. Finally, Wrex was only present in the demo through his voice, as he remained onboard the Normandy and spoke with Commander Shepard by radio during a mission.

All three situations showed former squad members acting in support roles on missions, suggesting that Mass Effect 3 may require players to choose squad members to perform secondary mission objectives in addition to the their immediate squad for battle.

Currently the only confirmed playable squad members in Mass Effect 3 are Liara, Kaiden / Ashley, Garrus, Tali and the new character James Vega.

Mass Effect 3 will release worldwide on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on March 6, 2012.
