A job listing for a senior software engineer by developer Treyarch states that the firm is "bringing [its] hugely successful game to a new console".
It suggests that the first-person series could be coming to Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita or Wii U, or even unannounced next-generation systems.
Treyarch has previously worked on Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: World at War, as well as Wii ports of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and the upcoming Modern Warfare 3.
Call of Duty: Black Ops was named as the best-selling game released in the UK earlier this year, selling three million copies nationwide.
Modern Warfare 3 will be available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC from November 8.
