'Battleship' movie gets video game spinoff from Activision

By
Battleship has been given a video game spinoff, combining naval command with first-person action elements.

The Battleship video game, which is being developed by Double Helix and published by Activision, will launch ahead of the movie's May release.

As elite demolitions specialist Cole Mathis, players must "command the US Navy fleet in a siege on the sea, while simultaneously rallying the troops on land for a terrifying war on the shore".

Inspired by Hasbro's long-running game, Battleship combines naval strategy simulation with first-person shooter gameplay, seamlessly "switching between the battlefield and overview 'Battle Command' map".

Calling the game an "outrageous sea and land conflict", Activision's David Oxford describes Battleship as "next-gen naval warfare that thrusts players into the middle of humanity's last stand against an unfamiliar menace".

Battleship will be available to purchase on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in April throughout Europe, and in May for North America.

"Uniquely designed versions" for the Nintendo Wii, 3DS and DS are being developed by Magic Pockets, with more details expected at a later date.

Directed by Peter Berg, the Battleship movie stars Liam Neeson, Rihanna, Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgard.

The film centres on a naval fleet that encounters an extra-terrestrial force at sea. The $200 million blockbuster will open on May 18, 2012.
