After earning a pair of degrees in physics and electrical engineering - and combining the two with an engineering physics PhD, Moog's effect on modern music cannot be understated.
At the age of 19, he founded a company to manufacture theremin kits, before he developed the Moog synthesiser.
One of his first customers was Walter (later Wendy) Carlos, whose work on the soundtrack to Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange still sounds like the future over 40 years on.
Moog died in Asheville, North Carolina on August 21, 2005 at the age of 71.
