Top Cow Productions has announced a movie adaptation of The Darkness at San Diego Comic-Con.

CEO Marc Silvestri invited Dave Manpearl of production partner Mandeville Films onto the stage during the Top Cow: We Create Excitement panel to unveil the project.

The movie will tell the origin of current Darkness-vessel Jackie Estacado.

"It's definitely an origin story," Silvestri told Comic Book Resources. "We have to introduce people to who Jackie is.

"The thing is, we have a really cool origin for him and a really well-realised character that people can relate to, even though he's surrounded by this fantastic s**t.

"It's not going to be cheap, and we're going to get A-list people on there. [It's something] that talent can really attach themselves to and put their mark on. The audience is ready for it.

"The audience has seen The Dark Knight. So now it's like, how do we turn that up to 11 with The Darkness?"

Silvestri did not give further details of the plot, saying that the film was in the "no comment stage".

The forthcoming video game sequel The Darkness 2 was recently delayed and will now be released in February 2012 rather than in October, as originally scheduled.

Phil Hester, the current writer of the comics, will depart with February's The Darkness #100, the panel also revealed.

His replacement is yet to be announced. The title's new artist will be Artifacts' Jeremy Haun.
