The 23-year-old dancer, singer and actress takes her first lead role in the film as Ariel, a rebellious teenager who acts out against the wishes of her minister father.
In a new interview with Parade, Hough insisted that everyone involved in the project felt confident that they could do justice to the original while still adding their own updated spin.
"Initially, there is always that thought, but then when you read a script and you know the director is going to do it justice because he loves the movie so much it was like, 'OK, I'm safe, we can do it justice'," she explained.
"I love this movie and I thought it would be really cool to play this character and give audiences of this day what the audiences got back in the '80s."
Hough also admitted that she discovered she had more in common with Ariel than she initially expected, adding: "I think she tends to put up this wall when you see her emotion coming out. There is this scene in the movie when she basically comes on to Ren and he basically shuts her down.
"Before she can get emotional about it she switches subjects and [does] something crazy. I think that she definitely holds up her walls like she is this bad girl but she's a little girl on the inside. That's what I do. I put my hard face on and cry on the inside."
Footloose will open in US and UK cinemas on October 14.
