Bradley Cooper has been offered the role of Napoleon Solo in Steven Soderbergh's The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Matt Damon and Johnny Depp have both turned down the part once earmarked for George Clooney, according to Variety.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. will be based on NBC's '60s espionage show, which starred Robert Vaughn and David McCallum as agents working for the United Network Command For Law Enforcement intelligence agency.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling and True Blood's Alexander Skarsgård have reportedly been shortlisted for the McCallum role, that of Russian agent Illya Kuryakin.

The Hangover star Cooper has upcoming roles in The Place Beyond the Pines and will play Lucifer in an adaptation of Paradise Lost.
