Kate Beckinsale has revealed that she does not enjoy playing likeable characters.

The Underworld actress said she prefers roles where the "human and empathetic" side has to be actively searched for.

"I'm not attracted to characters who are instantly likeable, nor am I that interested in making them likeable," she told Manhattan Magazine. "My goal is to make them real, to find what makes them human and empathetic, to trace a certain logic that explains why a character is how she is."

Discussing her part in the Underworld franchise, Beckinsale said that she felt braver and more determined since stepping into the role of vampire hunter Selene more than eight years ago.

"Underworld forced me out of my head, and I really needed that done," she explained. "Now I can put myself through things I find horrifying and emotional and know I will survive."

Underworld Awakening is released in cinemas on January 20.
