The True Blood actor, who stars in the forthcoming adaptation of the Hasbro game, agreed with director Peter Berg and explained that the film has a human element despite being an expensive action movie.
"We actually care about these guys," Skarsgård told The Huffington Post. "You root for them; you want them to make it."
He continued: "I wouldn't want to be in something big and epic just because it's big and epic. If I don't care about the characters, it's not fun for me as an actor."
The 35-year-old recently revealed that his True Blood character Eric will have a "bromance" with Stephen Moyer's Bill.
In November 2011, the actor said he enjoyed working with his father Stellan Skarsgård in Melancholia.
