Based on Stephen King's seven-book fantasy series, the plans for three feature films and two linking television miniseries were rejected by Universal Pictures last year over spiralling budget costs.
Ron Howard is still attached to direct the project and a deal is close for at least one film to be made, according to Deadline.
Javier Bardem is expected to star as gunslinger Roland Deschain, with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman producing alongside Brian Grazer and King.
Shooting is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2013.
King's long-running magnum opus followed the last gunslinger and his companions through a post-apocalyptic world that had 'moved on', also seeing the characters pass through our own world in search of the mythical Dark Tower.
Beginning in 1982, the final volume was released in 2004.
An eighth book, The Wind Through the Keyhole, is due out this year.
Marvel Comics has adapted The Dark Tower into an ongoing miniseries.
