Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia are in final negotiations to adapt Brian K Vaughan's hit Vertigo comic series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Y: The Last Man centres on Yorick, a young man who is the only survivor when a mysterious event wipes out all the world's male population.
The pair have collaborated on various television shows including post-apocalyptic drama Jericho and comic book adaptation Human Target, and were recently hired for Sony's new Zorro project.
The rights for Y were first acquired in 2007, with Disturbia director DJ Caruso and writer Carl Ellsworth teaming up to adapt with Shia LaBeouf rumoured for the starring role.
After struggling with a sprawling script and suggesting a trilogy, the project was eventually shelved.
Vaughan's new Image Comics title Saga launched this week and has already sold out at the distribution level.
