Vince Vaughn has been tapped to star in a movie remake of The Rockford Files.

The Wedding Crashers actor is in line to portray the lead role of Jim Rockford in the cop comedy drama, originally played by James Garner.

Vaughn would also produce the project with sister Victoria Vaughn through their Universal-based Wild West Picture Show Productions if he took it on, reports Deadline.

The Rockford Files originally ran from 1974-1980, and followed private eye Jim Rockford who had spent several years in San Quentin jail before receiving a pardon. He later worked out of his mobile home in Malibu beach while solving cases.

NBC had planned to produce a TV remake of The Rockford Files for several years, with House creator David Shore and Lost actor Josh Holloway once linked to the production before it fell through.

Vince Vaughn recently signed up to reteam with Owen Wilson in comedy project Interns.

He will next be seen opposite Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade in Neighbourhood Watch, which opens in the US on July 27 and in the UK on August 22.
