Jackman said in a statement issued on Friday (April 20): "I couldn't be more excited to return to Australia to film the next chapter in the Wolverine saga, thanks to the significant support from the federal and NSW governments.

"It will be great to work with the highly talented crew and to provide employment opportunities to so many people across all levels of the industry. Not to mention, [wife] Deb and I will get to spend some time with the family back in Australia."

The news comes after rewrites of the script by Total Recall writer Mark Bomback, and will focus on Jackman's character searching for clues to his past in the Japanese underground.

Filming on The Wolverine was initially expected to begin last year, but was delayed due to Jackman's other projects including Les Misérables.

James Mangold, known for his work on Walk the Line and 3:10 to Yuma, is to direct the project.

The Wolverine is scheduled for release on July 26, 2013 in both the UK and US.
