Anchorman director Adam McKay has said that big changes are in store for the Channel 4 Action News team in the upcoming sequel.

The filmmaker addressed the timeline for the eagerly-awaited follow-up, revealing that the action will move forward to 1978.

"It's right when all the news started changing with the 24-hours news cycle in '78 or '79," McKay told Empire.

"All of a sudden, local news stations diversified and had Latino anchors and African-American anchors, and any time you're talking about diversity and the Action News team, that's always fun to deal with."

McKay continued: "We know these guys never deal well with change, and the good thing is that there's a big blast of change coming."

Will Ferrell will reprise his role as Ron Burgundy in the comedy, and also co-write the script with McKay.

"We've done about two per cent! Half a per cent? We've got five pages of story notes and chunks of story. We're holing up writing for the next three months," McKay said of the script's progress.

2004's Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy also starred Christina Applegate as Ron's co-anchor Veronica Corningstone and David Koechner as sports reporter Champ Kind, with supporting players including Paud Rudd and Steve Carell.
