Owen Wilson is to star in a new action drama called The Coup, it has been reported.

According to Deadline, the film centres on Wilson, an American who relocates his family to Southeast Asia and becomes entangled in a violent coup.

Sources close to the film say that it has the tone of Liam Neeson's 2008 hit Taken, marking Wilson's first return to the action thriller genre since Behind Enemy Lines.

Devil director John Erick Dowdle is set to helm the project, and has co-written the script with brother Drew Dowdle.

Producers Adam Ripp and Rob Paris have said of the upcoming film: "We love the relentless energy of the Dowdle brothers' script - and their vision for dropping Owen in the midst of the chaos is truly inspired."

Wilson is gearing up to film the comedy You Are Here opposite Zach Galifianakis and Amy Poehler.

He recently starred in the critical and commercial success Midnight in Paris, which earned an Academy Award for 'Best Screenplay'.
