The Hunger Games will be screened in China, after Lionsgate secured approval.

The dystopian film topped the US box office for four weeks straight in April, but has not sold as well in some other countries. Screening the movie in China will add a boost to the adaptation's worldwide take.

"China is already one of the leading territories at the international box office," Lionsgate co-chairs Patrick Wachsberger and Rob Friedman said in a statement.

"And the launch of The Hunger Games in this key market is another sign of the franchise's continuing emergence as a truly global phenomenon," they added.

To date, The Hunger Games has grossed over $600m worldwide.

The Hunger Games recently received eight MTV Movie Award nominations, including a trio of nods for star Jennifer Lawrence.
