Eli Roth has announced plans to direct new horror thriller The Green Inferno.

Production company Worldview Entertainment today (May 17) announced at Cannes that it had signed on to finance and produce the movie.

Roth said: "I've had an amazing few years producing, writing and acting, and am very excited to get back in the director's chair.

"I've been working on this idea for several years, and was inspired by filming in Chile and cannot wait to get back."

He added: "Worldview backs my vision and believes in me, and is giving me the support I need and the freedom to take risks and make something daring and terrifying.

"I believe this will be the scariest and most intense film I have made to date. I want audiences worldwide to feel my return to directing was worth the wait."

Roth co-wrote the screenplay with Guillermo Amoedo, based on his own original story.

Amoedo previously co-wrote Nicolas Lopez's earthquake thriller Aftershock, which stars Roth alongside Selena Gomez and is now in post-production.

Production on The Green Inferno begins this autumn in Peru and Chile and Worldview's Maria Cestone, Sarah Johnson Redlich and Hoyt David Morgan will executive produce.
