The Oscar-winning actress will portray a mild-mannered library worker hoping to start a new life for herself in Costa Rica in Juan Feldman's indie drama.
The Librarian is based on screenplay by Joel Silverman, and will begin filming in the Central American country next month, Variety reports.
"[Costa Rica is] a magical place and one that really does have the natural power to help restore a person. The common greeting there are the words 'pura vida' - pure life," said director Feldman.
Harden, who filed for divorce from husband Thaddaeus Scheel in February, has been nominated for two Academy Awards in the past. She won an Oscar for her role in Pollock, and received her second nomination for Clint Eastwood's Mystic River.
The Librarian is yet to be given an official release date.
