In a video exclusively released through Digital Spy, Garfield explained that his high school student initially uses his powers to seek revenge on a criminal.
"The abandonment of his father and mother leads him to becoming who he is meant to become," he said.
"When Peter first designs the suit he's not going out to fight crime, he's not going out to protect innocents, he's going out to cause havoc and act out of revenge because of his uncle's death. He allows that desire for revenge to get the better of him.
"What I find so wonderful about this character is that everyone feels like him and can identify with him. Once he receives the power that he always felt belonged to him he finds himself doing good with it."
The Amazing Spider-Man opens in cinemas on July 3.
