Shooting began last month on the upcoming film, which star Hugh Jackman recently revealed is more of "a standalone picture" than a direct sequel to 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Twentieth Century Fox has now unveiled an official synopsis as follows: "Based on the celebrated comic book arc, The Wolverine finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan.
"There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed."
Jackman reprises his role as Logan, while 3:10 to Yuma helmer James Mangold is directing.
The film's supporting cast includes Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukushima.
The key role of Victoria/Viper remains uncast, following Jessica Biel's departure.
Mangold recently offered a hint at his approach to the film via Twitter, revealing that his influences as director included Powell & Pressburger's Black Narcissus, Hitchcock's Rear Window, Marnie and Vertigo, and Roman Polanski's Chinatown.
