'The Dark Knight Rises' crosses $1 billion mark worldwide

By
Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises has crossed the $1 billion mark for worldwide earnings.

The third and final film in Nolan's Batman trilogy stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Digital Spy's to-camera verdict on the trilogy's long-awaited conclusion.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, as of the weekend of September 1 the film has made $431.2 million (£271.8m) domestically and around $574 million (£361.8m) internationally, putting its total international gross at $1.005 billion (£633m).

The Dark Knight Rises has now become the 13th film in movie history to reach the $1 billion mark.

Its predecessor The Dark Knight also reached the milestone with slightly less, earning $533 million (£335.9m) domestically and $1.0003 billion (£632m) worldwide in 2008.

Analysts believe that The Dark Knight Rises may have taken in less money in North America due to the recent shooting tragedy during a midnight screening of the movie in Aurora, Colorado.
