Fortunately, that isn't the case with Take Me Home - despite its persuasive, 'great stocking-filler' title. New single 'Little Things' shows minor signs of growth with its barely-there acoustic riff and gooey lyrics penned by Ed Sheeran, even if it's not the greatest addition to their singles catalogue.
In fact, in the context of the rest of the album it was probably the least play-safe release they could have chosen, with 'Kiss You', 'C'mon C'mon' and 'Heart Attack' all sounding like easy chart smashes despite their predictable chant-along nature. Even 'Rock Me', which like the bulk of the set is backed by a plethora of songwriters, gets away with its Queen-esque clapping riff due to its simple-yet-genius catchiness.
Elsewhere, there are hints of where One Direction may be headed next, albeit minor. 'Last First Kiss' is a cutesy, guitar-heavy ballad but with heart (they each have a co-write), while the raunchier lyrics on 'Change My Mind' and 'Back For You' feel realistic for a group of world-famous guys with their pick of the bunch. The result may see them progressing at a snail's pace, but when you've got it so good, what's the rush anyway?
