We'll admit that we were caught off guard when McFly told us that next year sees them celebrating their tenth together as a band.

While we figure out just what we've been doing with ourselves, they've put together a new greatest hits album - the suitably-titled Memory Lane - which is headed up by their rather brilliant new single 'Love is Easy'.

We met up with Tom, Dougie, Harry and Danny to look back over the last decade and find out what the future holds for McFly.

Your new single 'Love is Easy' is out this week and it's in the top ten. That must be a relief?
All: "We're really pleased!"
Tom Fletcher: "It's a lot different now these days. The chart updates every hour, so checking where it is becomes really addictive."

There's a lot of competition out there at this time of year such as X Factor acts, the John Lewis advert song. Are you glad you can still compete with them?
Harry Judd: "We seem to loving putting our songs out on busy weeks. There's always something unexpected coming out that you can't plan for... like the John Lewis ad song."

But the song is still doing well...
Dougie Poynter: "It's nice that we can still do that. What's better is that I was sitting with my girlfriend last night and she saw us up there with Bruno Mars and stuff... it makes you look good!"
Tom: "We don't really have any links to get us on big TV shows or radio, so it means a lot to us that we can still get up the charts."
Harry: "I really think it's one of the best songs we've ever done. It would have been interesting to see how it did off the back of an X Factor performance or something."

Your new greatest hits album has quite an unusual tracklist; is this one more personal than the last?
Tom: "It has the obvious ones on there that'd we'd never take off, but we were also allowed to put on more of our personal favourites and fan favourites."
Dougie: "There's lots we never released that are big songs within the McFly fanbase. They sort of feel like hits in our minds!"

Such as?
Tom: "We played a show in Brazil where we didn't sing 'Transylvania'. We went off before the encore and the whole crowd sang the entire song from start to finish. It was bizarre but amazing! There are songs like 'Star Girl' as well which have grown over time as Chris Moyles played it every week."

What's the best McFly song?
Tom: "I genuinely think 'Love is Easy' is one of the best songs we've released in a long time."
Dougie: "It came on when I was in a cafe the other day. It sounded great!"
Tom: "We recorded the song a while ago and were keen to put it out as a single. It was one of the few songs where there was no disagreement between us or the label that it should be released."

Does it feel weird putting another retrospective out after only two albums?
Harry: "We didn't want to release our first greatest hits."
Tom: "We ignore the first one. We were sort of made to release it, which was weird because we hadn't been around for very long."
Harry: "It was one of the worst things to happen to us as a group. It felt very false and we didn't feel like we deserved it. We felt bad for the fans as well because we didn't put our hearts into promoting it."

What about this time then?
Dougie: "It feels like it all works and makes sense. We've released five albums. The single is perfect, the video is brilliant. It's been a year to reflect."
Tom: "Next year we celebrate ten years, so it's nice to round things off like this. Then next year we can start work on our next album."

It feels like there's a sense of finality around all this. How far off is the next McFly album?
Tom: "We're at that stage now. We started writing songs when Harry was in Strictly. It gave us some time to experiment and see where we wanted to go next. There are songs that sound like 'Love is Easy'. We're on another writing trip in January, which is where I think we'll really hone the album's sound. This certainly isn't the end."

Where does it look like it's going?
Tom: "I think think we'll be making a traditionally 'McFly'-sounding album this time. The last one was intentionally different, but what we've learnt from 'Love is Easy' is that we have a sound people associate with us. We love that sound as well, so it'll largely be in that vein."
Harry: "We've been guilty in the past of following trends - I don't think we want to do that anymore."

Are you still keen to pick up new fans? Is that even possible after ten years together?
Harry: "Definitely, but it has to be a natural thing. I think we can do it with songs like 'Love is Easy'. That's forever the challenge. It gets harder over time, but there are advantages to having been around for so long - there's a level of respect."

You've been lumped in the press with the new batch of boybands, but you were never really a proper 'boyband'. Does that annoy you?
Tom: "When we first started when we were younger it bugged us a bit because we were a band. We understand why people do it now - it's actually quite flattering as you get older!"

McFly's new single 'Love is Easy' is out now. The album Memory Lane follows on November 26.
