The blues musician's Slipstream is to feature several covers, including her versions of Bob Dylan's 'Standing in the Doorway' and the Loudon Wainwright III song 'You Can't Fail Me Now'.
Raitt said that recording Slipstream has helped her cope with the recent deaths of her parents, her brother and a friend.
"I hadn't stopped moving in a very long time so I really wanted to take a total break and not concentrate on making a new record or what I was going to do next," Raitt commented to The AP.
Of her decision to return to work, the singer added: "I [just] waited until I was really ready to come back."
Slipstream will be released through Raitt's Redwing Records on April 10.
Raitt's previous album Souls Alike reached the top 20 on the US album chart in 2005.
She has notched up four platinum-selling albums in her 40-year career and scored the pop hits 'Something to Talk About' and 'I Can't Make You Love Me'.
Raitt will also perform at the 2012 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival later this year.
