The Flaming Lips frontman came under fire from the soul singer after a music video for their collaboration 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' was leaked by the band without Badu's permission.
In the five-minute clip, Badu and occasionally her sister Nayrok as a body double appear naked in a bathtub full of glitter and several other unidentifiable substances.
After the leak, Badu made a public statement condemning Coyne and the band.
She wrote: "U disrespected me by releasing pics and rough vid on the internet without my approval. (Contract breech )... That is equivalent to putting out a security camera's images of me changing in the fitting room. I never would have approved that tasteless, meaningless, shock motivated video (sic)."
Coyne and his band apologised, taking full responsibility for the leak. However the rocker has now made new remarks suggesting that Badu's angry reaction is all for publicity.
He told BBC 6 Music during the Parklife Weekender festival: "She [Erykah] is a controversial entity in the world... So everything that she does has an element of her doing art.
"This video to me is not controversial, it's wonderful and I think Erykah knew she could play into it if we made a video that could be perceived as derogatory. Otherwise I don't think she'd be interested in it. I think [her reaction] is still in the realm of a creation of controversy."
Badu has yet to respond to Coyne's claims.
