Little Mix winning The X Factor was a rare moment of sound judgement from the show's voters, recognising the UK girlband scene was badly in need of a kick up the arse and they were the best shot we'd had in a long time to do it. With the obligatory woeful winner's song and months of primping and preening out of the way, does their first single proper live up to expectations?
Having listened to 'Wings' several times on the trot, we're happy to confirm that the answer is a resounding 'yes'. "Mama told me not to waste my life/ She said spread your wings my little butterfly," they chant over minimal beats slicker than a schoolyard jump rope final as they deliver a words-won't-bring-us-down message sans the usual heavy-handed balladry. The result won't be the saviour everyone was hoping for, but given the job on their hands, it's a seriously promising start.
