Playlist: 10 tracks you need to hear

 |  By and Lewis Corner  |  11 comments
Listen to our ten favourite new tracks below, including Florence + the Machine, Gossip, Plan B and Lianne La Havas.

Florence + the Machine: 'Spectrum' (Calvin Harris Remix) (out July 2)
It's a new week, so naturally there's yet another Calvin Harris-produced anthem to premiere. This week the Scot has teamed up with Florence + the Machine to remix their new Ceremonials single 'Spectrum'. Flo's voice is still as haunting as ever, but now it's joined by Italo house piano and club beats, which is no bad thing. LC

Plan B: 'Lost My Way' (UK: July 2)
Gone is the concept and smooth soul of Strickland Banks and in returns the hard line version of Plan B. Fast hip-hop beats, politically-charged lyrics and a raspy chorus will soundtrack the rapper-cum-director's new movie iLL Manors on June 6. If you hadn't already guessed from the song, the film is about surviving the modern streets of London. LC

Gossip: 'Move in the Right Direction' (UK: out now)
After 'Perfect World' was criminally overlooked, Gossip are pushing on with the second single from their A Joyful Noise album. Once again, the combination of Brian Higgins's production and writing skills with Beth Ditto's vocals and attitude produces fruitful results. LC

Little Nikki: 'Intro Intro' (out now)
We don't know much about rising star Little Nikki, other than she is 16 years old and apparently obsessed with pop music. She's currently unsigned, but with the Rihanna-meets-Azealia sound of 'Intro' leaving critics salivating to hear more, we suspect that won't last long. RC

Lianne La Havas: 'Is Your Love Big Enough' (out July 8)
Lianne's recent performance with Prince appears to have rubbed off on her latest effort, which infuses soul-funk guitars and handclaps with her own distinctive tones. It suits her remarkably well and leaves us more than a bit excited for her debut album, which follows on July 9. RC

The Chevin: 'Drive' (out now)
If rock is dead, then Yorkshire quartet The Chevin are here to resuscitate it. 'Drive' is a booming guitar-driven number that builds into sky-soaring finale. Following a well-received set at this year's SXSW 2012, it's no wonder they have already been booked to perform on America's The Late Show with David Letterman. LC

Foxes: 'Warrior' (out July 2)
Louisa Rose Allen aka Foxes caught the public's attention last year with her first major release 'Youth'. Back with an EP's worth of songs, title track 'Warrior' is a twinkly doom-ballad that is merely the tip of the iceberg of what to expect from this fast-rising star. RC

Loreen: 'Euphoria' (out now)
The winning song from this year's Eurovision is a rare beast, given that it's a genuinely decent song. Singer Loreen wails over a haunting techno beat that easily slots into today's charts; and the result is a Florence-meets-Guetta anthem that was easily most deserving of the crown. RC

I Am A Camera: 'Factory Boys' (UK: June 10)
You may have caught their remix of Lana Del Rey's 'Born To Die' earlier this year, but duo I Am A Camera are now preparing to release their own new single 'Factory Boys'. Based on the rags-to-riches story of The Dupont Twins, the cut is laced with trendy electronic squiggles, NY club beats and sweeping synths. LC

Amy MacDonald: 'Slow It Down' (out now)
The Scottish singer heads up third studio album Life in a Beautiful Light with 'Slow It Down', an infectious folk-pop ditty that packs a weightier punch than you might expect. RC
