The actor, who popped the question to Jolie in April, told reporters in Cannes that their decision to tie the knot was "something that made sense" to both of them.
Pitt was also questioned on whether he and Jolie have chosen a wedding date as of yet.
"We have no date at all right now - there is no date. We're still hoping for marriage equality in the States before we [wed]," said the star, according to People.
It was recently reported that Pitt proposed to Jolie based on fears that her UN work in Syria and Iraq puts her safety at risk.
The couple have received the blessing of Jolie's father Jon Voight, who described his daughter's engagement as "wonderful".
Pitt is currently in Cannes to promote his new film Killing Them Softly, which sees him portray a gangster working for a professional hitman.
