The pair's four-year relationship ended in 2008 when he pleaded guilty to several counts of conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering. Follieri has since been deported from the US following his prison stint.
Follieri has spoken out about his troubled past in a new issue of People, revealing that at one time he hoped to spend the rest of his life with Hathaway.
"We were talking about marriage… I was very much in love with her," the real estate developer said of the relationship.
Follieri also acknowledged that he had made "mistakes" in the past, but insisted that he straightened out his life while serving time in jail.
"I thought my life was over, but I learned to survive by focusing on getting through one day at a time," he said, adding: "I'm not a saint. But I'm not the devil."
Hathaway has moved on from Follieri since the scandal and is currently engaged to long-time love Adam Shulman.
