The couple's public romance was ended abruptly in 2009, when Brown physically attacked Rihanna before the Grammy Awards.
Oprah Winfrey sat down with Rihanna for an interview on Oprah's Next Chapter, where the 'We Found Love' singer revealed that she and Brown have mended fences and are now "very, very close friends".
"We've built a trust again and that's it," Rihanna explained, adding: "We love each other and we probably always will."
She continued: "That's not something you can change. That's not something you can shut off, if you've ever been in love."
Rihanna went on to admit that it's "awkward" when she sees Brown these days because he is in a relationship with Karrueche Tran.
"[My] stomach drops [when I see him]," Rihanna told Winfrey. "[I] maintain this poker face and not let it get to the outer part of me."
The singer concluded: "I still love him. I think he was the love of my life."
Rihanna also commented to Winfrey that she felt like she'd lost her "best friend" after her 2009 altercation with Brown.
"I was resentful. I held a grudge. I was dark," she recalled.
