Fielding is currently writing the third instalment of the hugely popular series, following 1996's Bridget Jones's Diary and 1999's The Edge of Reason.

The third novel will be released in November, publisher Alfred A Knopf confirmed today (February 5).

Bridget Jones was born through Fielding's Independent column in the mid-1990s about a single 30-something woman living in London.

The two novels have sold over 15 million copies worldwide and have been published in 40 different countries.

"My life has moved on and Bridget's will move on, too," says Fielding. "I hope people will have as much fun reading it as I am writing it."

The new book will be set in present-day London and will follow Bridget in a new stage in her life.

"Few writers can rival Helen Fielding when it comes to fully capturing the modern woman," the publisher's chairman Sonny Mehta said. "I have been waiting a long time to see what's next for Bridget Jones, and I am beyond thrilled she's back."

The series was adapted into two movies starring Renée Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth.

The original Bridget Jones's Diary was a worldwide box office success in 2001, taking in more than $281m (£174.3m) at the box office.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason also proved a big hit in 2004.

A third film has already been announced, and will most likely be based on the third novel by Fielding.

Working Title Films recently said that a third film was uncertain, but may be back on track following the confirmation of a new book.
