The pair have experienced a turbulent relationship since Andrew arrived on screen at the end of 2009.
However, in an interview with Digital Spy, Smith explained that Paul (Stefan Dennis) could start to play a more positive role in Andrew's life in the months to come.
He explained: "They definitely do get closer and a lot more comfortable with each other. Andrew isn't afraid to answer him back and Paul will give him advice. It's awesome working with Stefan."
Hinting at what else is in store for his alter ego this year, Smith confirmed that Andrew will face some important decisions but also feature in less serious storylines.
"Andrew's got another hectic year ahead, particularly with school wrapping up, deciding where he wants to go, and the love interests in his life change quite a bit," he said. "And what we are filming is a lot lighter, more humour which I'm enjoying."
Next week, fans in the UK will see the Andrew, Natasha and Summer love triangle storyline reach a climax as Andrew discovers that Natasha has been lying about her 'pregnancy'.
