EastEnders star Nina Wadia has admitted that she wants 'lighter' material ahead for her character Zainab Khan.

Zainab recently reached a huge turning point as she finally made peace with Christian Clarke, the partner of her son Syed (Marc Elliott).

The mum-of-four decided to bury the hatchet with Christian (John Partridge) shortly after she had confessed the truth about the night of the B&B blaze, when she sent her abusive husband Yusef back into the flames.

Wadia told PA of Zainab's future: "I finally get to show the world she's not a homophobe. It was very emotional filming those scenes with John Partridge. I'm hoping they lighten her up a bit now."

The actress also reaffirmed her desire to see Zainab reunited with ex-husband Masood (Nitin Ganatra) in the near future.

"I've known Nitin for about 20 years now - I think I'm more married to him than my own husband! It's been really difficult not having him around," she explained.

"They've paired me up with Diane Parish for the Minute Mart stuff. I think they like the duo there, which is great fun and girl power, but I do miss working with Nitin."

EastEnders continues on Thursday (March 15) at 7.30pm on BBC One.
