OnLive Desktop puts Windows on Apple's iPad

OnLive Desktop has been announced at technology trade show CES.

The service will allow mobile and tablet users to instantly access a Windows desktop using cloud-based technology.

It will feature a full Microsoft Office suite of applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as access to high definition videos and animations.

Touch gestures including dragging, dropping, pinch to zoom and Aero snap will be possible, and files created through the app can be later accessed through OnLive's website to download.

The firm will also launch enterprise services for businesses and organisations, as well as collaborate desktops allowing thousands of users to view, control and discuss across a shared desktop experience.

OnLive Desktop will launch this Thursday for free on iPad, and will come with 2GB of storage. Users can also upgrade to a Pro service that features additional applications and 50GB of storage for $9.99 a month.

Support for other mobile devices will be announced soon.

OnLive, which launched in the UK last year, is a cloud gaming service that provides instant on-demand gaming that can be streamed to multiple devices, including PCs, Macs, tablets and television sets.

It has since launched on Android tablets, Kindle Fire and Xperia Play with full button controls.
