Users can download the free update by linking up to a WiFi connection and following the update prompt.

Sony launched the PlayStation-certified Tablet S in September last year, followed by the Tablet P in November. The latter device was expected to receive Android 4.0 at the same time as its counterpart, but an update is yet to materialise.

The electronics giant previously pledged to bring the operating system to the Xperia range of smartphones, and maintains that updates for the Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V, and Xperia Ray handsets remain on schedule.

Last month, rumors that Sony is working on a next generation tablet surfaced, following the emergence of a benchmarking listing for a device codenamed V150.

Sony is expected to bring Ice Cream Sandwich to other devices next month.
