Tumblr president John Maloney resigns

Tumblr president John Maloney has resigned from his post amid claims that his experience would not be applicable to a large-scale operation.

The Wall Street Journal cites sources close to the company stating that the executive's skills became less relevant once the microblogging company exceeded 100 employees.

Maloney admitted to the Tumblr board of directors earlier this year that he has no interest in becoming a "big network operator".

He said: "I am a good operator. Am I one of those big network operators? That is not particularly interesting to me nor does it play to my strengths."

The news follows revelations that Tumblr will introduce paid adverts to its service from next month, despite founder David Karp previously expressing opposition.

"Tumblr will have a shot at building a meaningful ad platform," said Tumblr director Bijan Sabet. "There is too much evidence of something important happening here for advertisers not to care."

Tumblr had 21.8m unique visitors in March, up by a million on February, according to comScore data. The site is currently the fourth-most popular social network in the UK by unique visitors.
