According to Fairfax NZ News, the social network could start charging members US$2 (£1.25).
A trial of the feature was apparently stumbled upon by a Facebook user in Whangarei, New Zealand. He was given the option of highlighting status updates and pictures with a yellow background in exchange for the sum.
Following concerns that it was a scam, Facebook spokeswoman Mia Garlick confirmed that it was legitimate.
"We're constantly testing new features across the site," she said.
"This particular test is simply to gauge people's interest in this method of sharing with their friends."
She added that the feature is being trialled at various price points, including a free option.
Earlier this week, Facebook announced plans for an App Centre to house all of its add-ons.
