'The Big C' star: 'Comedy helps you cope with reality'

By
Laura Linney in "The Big C" from Showtime
The Big C star Laura Linney has suggested that comedy helps people to cope with reality.

In the Showtime series, Linney stars as Cathy, a woman who is diagnosed with cancer.

The actress has now told TV Guide that she wanted to work on the show because it deals with issues she is interested in.

"I've been obsessing about the limited time allotted to a human being and what we do with that time," she said. "I thought this was a wonderful opportunity to explore these topics, especially in the context of comedy. To me, comedy is a way to cope with reality."

Linney added that anyone who battles cancer, including her character Cathy, is "heroic".

However, she continued: "[Cathy's] not unique - she's one of millions of people. Hopefully she will make people ask themselves, 'How would I behave? What would I do in that place?' That's good enough."

The second season of The Big C, which features appearances from stars including Hugh Dancy and Parker Posey, airs on Mondays at 10.30pm on Showtime.
