The original series, which starred The Hour's Anna Chancellor, ran for two series on Channel 5 and was broadcast in the US on Oxygen.
Deadline says that ABC has now started developing a US remake, which would focus on a woman who escapes her father's ties to the criminal underworld by moving to the suburbs.
However, she soon discovers that she has to use what she learned from her criminal family to get the life she wants.
The show's script will be penned by Byron Balasco, who has previously worked on series such as FlashForward, Happy Town and Detroit 1-8-7.
HBO previously attempted to remake the comedy in 2008 but it did not pass the pilot stage.
ABC recently launched a new suburban satire, Suburgatory, which has performed well in the ratings so far.
