The musician and actress is working on a potential comedy series for the network, The Hollywood Reporter says.
The show is expected to focus on Lina Molina, a graduate who is forced to move from New York to Texas because of the economic climate.
She ends up returning home to live with her eccentric Mexican family.
Lopez is collaborating on the project with Grace Parra, who is due to pen the script.
Parra has previously worked on shows including Jonas and Glory Daze and is also thought to be involved in ABC's upcoming midseason comedy Work It.
MTV recently ordered two new scripted shows, Underemployed and Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous, as well as a remake of British comedy The Inbetweeners.
