Chelsea General is based on the upcoming novel Monday Mornings, which was penned by CNN's medical correspondent Dr Sanjay Gupta.
The book follows five different surgeons as they come to terms with their mistakes or problems at their hospital's weekly morbidity and mortality conference.
TNT has now confirmed that a pilot for Chelsea General has been ordered.
"Chelsea General promises to be a smart, witty and extremely powerful medical drama - the kind of series David E Kelley is renowned for making," said TNT's head of programming Michael Wright.
"We look forward to working with David and Sanjay in bringing the doctors' fascinating stories and characters to television."
Kelley is probably best known for creating the series Ally McBeal but his other credits include LA Law, Chicago Hope, The Practice, Boston Legal and Harry's Law. His latest project, Wonder Woman, did not make it past the pilot stage.
Other pilots which have recently been ordered by TNT include Western drama Gateway and canine crime procedural Scent of the Missing.
