Dan Aykroyd is developing a Blues Brothers animated series.

The actor has teamed with Judy Belushi - widow of his former co-star John Belushi - to form Blues Brothers Approved Ventures LLC, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

A broadway musical, a branded radio network, books and more are planned, in the collaboration between Aykroyd, Belushi and Panacea Entertainment.

The Blues Brothers began life in a 1978 episode of Saturday Night Live, before characters Jake (Belushi) and Elwood (Aykroyd) were spun off into a hit 1980 film.

"Thirty years after Jake passed through the veil, the Blues Brothers are being introduced to not one but two entirely new generations of music lovers," said Aykroyd.

"Judy and I welcome the experienced guiding hand of [Panacea chairman] Eric Gardner, who envisions ways of expanding our reach and impact which we never even thought of."

A new television series based around the Blue Brothers was first announced in August last year.

The project was reportedly intended to focus on Elwood's search for his real father, with Aykroyd expected to provide the voice of Jake and Elwood's parole officer.
