CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler has explained the decision to axe CSI: Miami.

Tassler told reporters at the US TV upfronts that the network had decided to axe either Miami or sister show CSI: NY, in order to move popular drama The Mentalist into a new slot.

"It was about keeping the flow, and Miami was the odd man out," she explained.

CSI: Miami - starring David Caruso - ran for ten seasons, with the final episode 'Habeas Corpse' airing on April 8.

The fifth season of The Mentalist will now air in the show's old Sunday 10pm slot.

CSI: NY - with Gary Sinise - will return for a ninth season, airing on Fridays at 8pm.
