The 33-year-old stars in Saving Hope, where she plays a doctor whose fiancé (Michael Shanks) is left comatose following a car accident. His spirit wanders the halls of the hospital where she works, trapped between the world of the living and the dead.
"It's been a real, real roller coaster," Durance told TV Line of the role.
"Most shows work up to a point like this, and we started at this just high-octane place. And so, as an actress it's been very interesting to try to find different levels and different ways to experience this huge emotional stake."
She went on to say that her character isn't always "in this sense of cataclysmic despair".
"They do these wonderful flashbacks to her and Charlie's relationship," Durance said. "You get little vignettes of fun, quirky, light stuff going on, and then you have the main course of what's happening with me. I think they've tied it together really beautifully."
Vampire Diaries actor Daniel Gillies also stars in Saving Hope, though he has insisted that the role will not make it impossible for him to return to the CW series.
Saving Hope premieres tonight (June 7) at 9/8c on NBC.
