Of his new NBC series Go On - created by Friends writer Scott Silveri - Perry told reporters: "Scott is just a better writer than I am.
"The good and bad news is that Scott created a TV show... for me [that's] better than the one I created for myself."
Since Friends concluded in 2004, Perry has also starred in NBC's Aaron Sorkin drama Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which was again cancelled after a single season.
Go On will star the 42-year-old actor as Ryan King, a sportscaster struggling to move on from the loss of his wife.
NBC will air a special preview of the show on August 8 following coverage of the London 2012 Olympics, with the series debuting in full on September 11.
