Joshua Jackson has admitted that the producers of Fringe have taken a big risk this season by effectively rebooting the show's timeline.

Jackson's character Peter Bishop was erased from existence in the show's season three finale, but finally returned during this week's season four episode.

"I thought it was necessary," Jackson told Entertainment Weekly, regarding his absence from the fourth season so far. "You need to give space to explore the effect Peter's choice had.

"Otherwise, you make that last season cliffhanger final - which I thought was a big, ballsy thing to do - not all that important."

Jackson said that his character will struggle to deal with the fact that none of his friends remember or trust him.

"It's going to take him a while to give a damn about these people, because they don't treat him very well at the beginning," he explained. "I think he's concerned about hurting these people, because he knows something has gone wrong and he's a danger to them.

Jackson added: "But I think there's a little bit of self-righteousness too. I just saved two universes and you lock me up in a prison cell?"

Fringe continues Fridays on Fox.
